A-Level Textiles

For my A-Level Textiles coursework, I have chosen to explore the theme “Natural Forms”. This theme encompasses anything nature has formed, so I have chosen to explore the aspects of this that interest me most, like succulents and fossils. On this page, I have explored skeletons and taken inspiration from the structure and shapes of Iris Van Herpen and Kei Ninomiya’s work and my primary photographs, which I took at the Natural History Museum.

I chose here to explore the colours and patterns in an X-ray by developing methods of printing. I started by completing a screen print, but I was unhappy with how one-dimensional it was. I then experimented with painting heat transfer paint onto sublimation paper and using a heat press to get my design onto fabric. I enjoyed the organic textures and tones that I got from this method, so I refined it further by exploring different methods of applying the paint.

This is the completed garment for my project. (See the video below for more information about this garment)

Historical Costume Project

This is a mood board I created based on the Edgar Allan Poe Book, “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”. I decided to turn this book into a costume design project after my dad recommended that I read Poe’s short stories, I was captivated by his use of striking description and his characterisation of both the house and Roderick and Madeline. I’m a fan of the Gothic style and I felt that after studying nature for my textile work, this project would be refreshing and help broaden my study of design.

These are some of the quotes I noted down on the two characters that I’ve chosen to look at. I also reflected on the Mathew Bourne ballet I saw, which was a gothic retelling of Sleeping Beauty, I felt that I could look at the costumes from this production for inspiration in my designs.

For my second design, I chose to research traditional 1800s burial gowns as I wanted to create a design for when Lady Madeline next appears in the book, 8 days after being buried. I kept the design for her clothing very modest and simple as these burial robes were often hand-sewn. I have taken inspiration from quotes from the book and Kate Hawley’s costume design in "Crimson Peak". I have also altered the burial robe with blood stains and purposeful damage.

Life Drawing

These are some sketches I did in a life drawing class, the person who ran the class got the model to pose in different positions for increasing lengths of time to allow us to build our observational skills. I found that doing quicker sketches was helpful for me as it allowed me to focus only on the important features to be able to capture the model’s likeness best. I attended this class to help me improve my knowledge of body proportions for designing garments.

I ended the life drawing class by using charcoal, I enjoyed this medium as I was able to create a more expressive sketch with deeper shadows.

A-Level Art

This is some of the work I have completed as part of my A-Level art coursework. I started by researching some different artists and completed copies of their work to build my technique. I then took many photos in the style of the artists, which I used for my observational studies.

I decided that I wanted to focus on Assemblage after looking at Helen Wilson’s other artworks like “Memento Mori”. To develop my second observational study I decided to explore sculpture. I started this by sculpting the Victorian printer’s tray using Mod Roc. I then added some found objects to my shelf and some objects that I have created using different techniques, like sculpture and painting.
